Course Preview
Stage 3 in the Giro d'Italia runs from Vinci to Orbetello. The route amounts to 219 kilometres and is tailor-made for a sprint finish.
Vinci is a small Tuscan town near Florence. The birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci is included to mark the 500th anniversary of the famous artist’s death.
The walled medieval town is located on the north-west slopes of the Montalbano hills and surrounded by olive trees and vineyards. The riders set off to head south and finish in Orbetello. On the way there the riders face some minor hurdles and since the last 30 kilometres are pan-flat a bunch sprint is the most likely outcome.
Orbetello is an ancient town on the lagoon with the same name. It is an essential lagoon of the Tyrrhenian sea with a concentration of thousands of birds. Small wonder that Lago di Orbetello is home to a Natural Reserve.
