Race Recap

Dario Cataldo won stage 15 of the Giro d’Italia in Como today after spending all day in the breakaway with Mattia Cattaneo (Androni Giocattoli). The duo arrived at the finish just moments before a stampede of GC favorites, and Cataldo took the win from the front, easily outsprinting Cattaneo.

Carapaz remains in the maglia rosa, 47 seconds ahead of Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma). Vincenzo Nibali is third, a minute and 47 back.

Despite the fact that the first portion of today’s stage was flat and fast, no one was interested in spending the day in the breakway except Cataldo and Cattaneo, who were probably hoping they’d be joined by a few other bodies. The duo eventually built up an advantage of more than 16 minutes, the largest in this year’s Giro, as the peloton seemed unwilling to believe another bike race was happening.

With Movistar at the front, the gap to the duo continued to grow until Michelton Scott came to the front halfway through the stage and started to reverse their advantage. By the time they hit the bottom of the first climb, the Ghisallo, the Australian outfit had cut their lead by half.

Ghisallo was a warm up to what was to come on the Colma di Sormano. After all the work by Mitchelton Scott, Simon Yates finished it off with a few attacks off the front, that the rest of his GC rivals seemed unimpressed with. They let the British rider off the front by a few meters before gradually working him back into the fold.

Things calmed in the GC group after a brief counter-attack by Miguel Angel Lopez and the breakaway increased their advantage yet again to over four minutes. It was beginning to look promising that the duo might make it to the line.

On the final climb, Nibali launched some dangerous attacks which put his rivals into a panic, especially Roglic, who was forced to ride his teammate’s bike following a mechanical. Carapaz stuck to the Italian’s wheel like glue each time an acceleration went up the road. The two caught Hugh Carthy (EF Education First) who had an earlier dig and the three descended together in a bid to put time into Roglic. Initially yo-yoing off the back of this group, Yates caught on to finish eventual third.

Meanwhile, the original breakaway made it into Como just 20 seconds ahead of the Nibali group. Cataldo led from the front to take his first ever Giro d’Italia win after a handful of second places in previous years. \n
