Race Recap

Caleb Ewan took home victory number two at the Giro d’Italia today on a flat stage 11, and the final day for the sprinters before the race heads to the Alps. Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) claimed second and Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) finished in third place. Demare’s results see him take the ciclamino jersey from Ackermann by just one point.

Valerio Conti (UAE Team Emirates) remains in the pink jersey as the overall leader after keeping out of trouble during another routine stage in the Po Valley.

It was another quiet day in the saddle for the peloton on today’s 221km jaunt through northern Italy’s industrial region. As usual this week, a breakaway was let off the front with no resistance from the peloton, and the names were the same as in previous days: Marco Frapporti (Androni-Giocattoli-Sidermec), Mirco Maestri (Bardiani-CSF) and Damiano Cima (Nippo-Fantini-Faizanè), all riders looking to increase their kilometres in the Fuga Pinarello, or the breakaway competition.

The trio was quickly allowed an advantage of six minutes, but the peloton decided that might be a bit much, and reeled them into a manageable three or four minutes during the majority of the stage. By the time they reached the intermediate sprint, which was won by Cima, they were holding a 2’30” gap.

The catch finally came with about 20 kilometres left, the three off the front gave a handshake before they were reabsorbed and the race could reset for the sprinters. From there, both the GC and sprint teams began to organize their trains, but the pace didn’t really kick in until inside 10 km to go when Christian Knees (Ineos) attempted a late attack.

Ackermann was the first of the big sprinters to start his windup, however, it was Ewan with the edge today, as he came out of his slipstream to pass the German and Demare to take his second win of this year’s edition.

Tomorrow's stage is the first visit to the Alps and perhaps the first chance for the GC contenders to shake things up. Starting in Cuneo at 13:10 CEST, the 158-kilometre route has one category 1 climb at Montoso (129.5km) before finishing in Pinerolo.\n
