Stage 4 of the 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) upset the biggest TT specialists in the world to win stage 4 of the Critérium du Dauphiné. The cyclocross star crushed the 26.1-kilometre course to finish with a time of 33’38, 31 seconds ahead of Tejay van Garderen (EF Education First) who had a fantastic ride to take second on the day. Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) finished a further 47 seconds back for third.
“It’s a great win,” van Aert said after the stage. “I can’t believe it. I worked a lot on my time trialling these past few weeks but I didn’t expect to win today. I’m super happy. Obviously, it was a good course for me on the long straight roads. I knew before that I was a good time trialist but I never had a chance to focus on it and I never had the right material before. Now with a very experienced team it makes a big difference. This was my first TT for Jumbo-Visma and I directly won it. It’s my first WorldTour victory too. I definitely proved on this Dauphiné that it’s a good choice to go to the Tour de France this year.”
In the GC competition, Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Merida) gave it his all, but it wasn’t quite enough to hold on to yellow. The Belgian slipped into second overall after Australian Adam Yates (Mitchelton Scott) leapfrogged him by four seconds. Van Garderen is in third overall by six seconds.
"We knew it would be a hard day but it was a very good course for me, really,” Teuns said. “These big long straights aren’t my favourites but I put my head down and rode the climb as fast as possible. I made good time. It was a good day for me. It’s a sprinters’ stage tomorrow, so hopefully, other teams will be eager to control. It’ll be a massive task to bring the yellow jersey till the end. I hope to do it but I’ll take it day by day. It’s gonna be tricky. I’m sure the mountain stages will be hard to control." \n \n
