2018 Tour of Utah Stage 3 Results & Recap
Stage 3 of the 2018 Tour of Utah is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.

McCabe doubles at Tour of Utah\nBy Clara Beard
Travis McCabe became the winningest rider at the Tour of Utah after claiming his second victory in Layton today. The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling rider sprinted to the line ahead of Jasper Philipsen (Axeon) and Edwin Avila (Israel Cycling Academy) after four hours of racing under the hot, Utah sun.
Sepp Kuss (Lotto NL Jumbo) retained his yellow jersey as overall race leader, 19 seconds ahead of his teammate and best young rider Neilson Powless. Tejay van Garderen (BMC) sits third at 25 seconds.
At 188 kilometres, the Antelope Island to Layton City stage was the longest of this year’s edition of the Tour of Utah. After a short kilometre of neutral, the attacks came thick and fast, and didn’t let up for more than an hour of racing. It took almost 70 kilometres before anything stuck, with 10 riders finally getting up the road. The breakaway consisted of Tony Baca (303 Project), Hamish Schruers (Israel Cycling Academy), Lucas Hamilton (Mitchelton-Scott), Michael Rice (Axeon Hagens Berman), Jonny Clarke (UnitedHealthcare), Gage Hecht (Aevolo), Rob Britton (Rally Cycling), Damiano Cima (Nippo-Vini Fantini), Laurent Didier (Trek-Segafredo) and Brendan Canty (EF Education First-Drapac).
With Britton the highest placed rider at 2 minutes to Kuss, the breakaway was kept under close watch by Lotto NL Jumbo. The gap hovered from a minute and 30 seconds to two minutes during the mid point of the race, but eventually the pace from Lotto, and later by Jelly Belly, caused the break to just have 40 seconds by the time the break reached the five, 5km circuits around Layton.
Clarke and Britton were the last riders from the breakaway to be caught with two laps to go, and from there Jelly Belly took charge until the young Hagens Berman Axeon team burst to the front for Philipsen. McCabe’s lead out rider, Seba Haedo was able to over come the Axeon train and get to the front, but Philipsen claimed the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling rider’s wheel, with McCabe right behind. After Haedo pulled off, it was a drag race to the line, with McCabe pulling ahead by a wheel length.
