Course Preview

Welcome to the first stage of the 101st edition of the Giro with a summit finish. Time for the GC riders to stay awake, as the ascent up Mount Etna is no joke. The climb is 14 kilometers long, with a maximum of 15 percent in the first quarter and an average of eight percent four kilometers from the top. The first portion of the race will also be difficult with its rolling climbs, but there are no classified ascents before the charge up the volcano, however, so a breakaway could last until the run in to the top. On the way up, the riders will pass the Rifugio Sapienza Astrophysics Observatory.
