Viviani claims second win at Giro
Pink jersey remains with Dennis
The speed of the Italian fast man can’t be denied this Giro d’Italia. Elias Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) unleashed his power at the end of stage 3 to take his second victory of this year’s edition. Despite being pressured from Sam Bennett, who tried to take the inside line along the barriers, Viviani quickly shut the door on the Bora-hansgrohe threat before posting up in victory.
EF Education First’s Sacha Modolo finished second and Bennett had to be content with third place.
Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing) will keep the pink jersey after surviving the long, hot flat affair through the Israel desert. His nearest rival, Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) still sits behind at one second.
At 229 kilometres, today’s stage was the second longest day in the saddle the riders will see during this edition of the Giro. After a short neutral, the flag was dropped and a breakaway was established almost immediately, as has been typical in prior stages.
Guillaume Boivin (Israel Cycling Academy), Marco Frapporti (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec) and Enrico Barbin (Bardiani-CSF) set off down the road, and the peloton was more than happy to let them escape. Almost immediately, the trio gained six minutes before BMC Racing decided to shorten the leash to about three minutes.
Currently sitting second in the points classification behind Viviani, Boivin went for both intermediate sprints, while Barbin took the opportunity in the break to pad his lead in the mountains category.
It was a quiet, routine day, and the action really started with 50 kilometres left, when the speed picked up courtesy of the sprinters teams. Despite the fear of crosswinds playing havoc with the peloton, all finished safely in Eliat after more than five hours in the saddle.
