Froome delivers ride of his life\nBy Clara Beard
Chris Froome (Team Sky) astounded his rivals and spectators alike after attacking Colle delle Finestre and finishing solo on the uphill finish in Bardonecchia. The Sky rider was alone in front for the next 80 kilometres, forcing Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) to chase over two more classified climbs. Richard Carapaz (Movistar Team) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ) finished second and third.\n \n “I don’t think I’ve ever attacked 80km from the finish in my career so far, riding on my own and going all the way to the finish,” Froome said. “The team did a fantastic job to set that up for me. First we had to get rid of Simon Yates and then to ride away from Tom Dumoulin. To go from fourth to first, I wasn’t going to do it on the last climb. Colle delle Finestre was the perfect place to do it. The gravel roads remind me of Africa. There’s another hard day tomorrow but the legs are feeling better and better as the race goes on.”
Froome’s performance launched him into the maglia rosa, the first of his career. He now sits 40 seconds in front of Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) with one more giant mountain stage left tomorrow. Thibald Pinot jumped to third place after Domenico Pozzovivo also struggled in the mountains.
Simon Yates started the day in pink, 28 seconds ahead of Dumoulin, but didn’t have the legs to withstand the pressure from Team Sky, who applied the pressure early on in the stage and didn’t let up until Froome’s devastating attack on the Cima Coppi climb.
“I tried to manage it, but it was blowing out very quickly and I had nothing to give,” Yates said after the stage. “Just really, really exhausted and that’s how it is. I tried to ride as fast as possible and I gave everything today.”
Tomorrow’s 214 kilometer stage from Susa to Cervina features three category one climbs and the last chance for any other GC shake ups.
