Trentin sprints to victory in Tarragona
Matteo Trentin won the fourth stage of the Vuelta a Espana with a perfectly timed sprint to overtake Juan José Lobato (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Canndonale-Drapac’s Tom van Asbroeck who finished second and third place respectively after a long and flat 193 km of racing.
Chris Froome maintains his lead in the overall competition by two seconds.
Originally a breakaway of eight riders that gained an advantage of over six minutes on the sleepy peloton, only Diego Rubio (Caja Rural) and Stephane Rossetto (Cofidis), were left in the latter part of the stage when the main field decided to turn on the gas.
Aqua Blue Sport, Quickstep Floors and Cofidis took over from Team Sky when the marker hit 50 kilometres to go and started to gradually reel the stubborn breakaway back in.
The two leaders were caught with eight km to go and from there it was full gas to the line in Tarragona. A large crash took out a few riders on the run in to the finish, with Ag2r La Mondiale’s Domenico Pozzovivo being the most notable rider who lost a significant amount of time on GC as it was outside of the 3 kilometre mark.
Quick-Step was in complete control of the sprint going into the final bend, but it was Lobato who jumped first, forcing Trentin to respond – which he easily did by using the Spanish rider’s slipstream then coming around him for the win.
With Trentin’s win, that makes him a stage winner in all three grand tours.
