Trentin wins final stage of Vuelta

Chris Froome sealed the red jersey of the Vuelta a Espana on the final day into Madrid. The overall win is his fifth grand tour victory of his career.

Matteo Trentin sprinted to the stage win on the day, easily defeating Lorrenzo Manzin (FDJ) and Soren Kragh Andersen (Team Sunweb) at the line.

“The whole team worked incredible the whole day,” Trentin said. “I think it could be seen in the television. The job started from when we entered the circuit to the finish and we could gain another victory. (Chris) Froome told me he wanted to defend the green jersey. It's a pity (not to get the green jersey) after four victories. I won two bunch sprints and two hard days and I can be happy with it.”

Froome crossed the line in 11th place, good enough to add the green points jersey to his collection. The Sky rider also claimed the combination jersey.

Davide Villella (Cannondale-Drapac) won the KOM classification.

“It means a lot to me,” Villella said after the stage. “It's a huge emotion to bring the jersey to Madrid. I had it from Andorra (stage 3) until the last day. I want to thank my team for all the support they gave me to make this possible. I'm happy. My next big goal will be the Giro di Lombardia, a race that means something special to me. I hope to be among the best there and then I'll think about the future.”\nThe final stage from Arroyomolinos started off as a celebration, as is tradition on the last day of grand tours. The peloton swapped some laughs, posed for pictures and shared some bubbly while soft pedaling to the circuits in Madrid.\nSky were the first to turn up the pace after giving Alberto Contador a few moments to celebrate his career at the front of the peloton. \nAlessandro De Marchi (BMC), Rui Costa (UAE Team Emirates) and Nicholas Schultz (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) were the only move of the day, given a short leash by QuickStep-Floors, keen to get Matteo Trentin the win.

The leaders were reabsorbed on the last lap, and from there it was business as usual for Quickstep, who delivered Trentin to the line with ease despite attacks from Team Sky.
