Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Floors) wins stage two of the Vuelta a Espana

On a long, flat stage devoid of almost any action, Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Floors) found himself with a small gap in the closing meters of the race and held it to the line in Gruissan. Lampaert’s teammate, Matteo Trentin finished in second place while Adam Blythe (Aqua Blue Sport) rounded out the podium in third at the Vuelta a Espana.

The move put Lampaert into the lead of the race.

“This jersey is very special,” Lampaert said. “I still can’t believe I’m starting tomorrow in the red jersey it’s an amazing moment in my career.”

During the 203 km stage that took place in France, the peloton was too nervous to send anyone up the road. No attacks went up the road, making for a group ride for the majority of the stage. The wind was predicted to make the race extremely difficult, but the wind never really showed up until the finale, when splits started to appear with 10 kilometres left.

When the peloton reached the finishing town, Lampaert took off, expecting Trentin to be on his wheel. However, no one was on his wheel and he went away and into the stage win and into the red jersey as the leader of the overall. \n
