Trentin takes third win at Vuelta

Matteo Trentin is on fire at the Vuelta a Espana, winning his third stage in style after a technical and steep last kilometre in Tomares. The points classification leader out-kicked Gianni Moscon (Sky) who finished second. Soren Kragh Andersen (Sunweb) claimed third place after 198.4km of racing.

Trentin’s win gives his QuickStep-Floors team a total of five victories and counting at the Vuelta a Espana.

“To be honest, it wasn't at all a finale to my taste,” Trentin said after the stage. “On paper it looked like it was less hard, especially from 3km to 2km to go. But we decided to go for it, the whole team except of course for (David) De La Cruz. The guys were incredible. Everybody did his job, gave 100 percent of what he had. I had to win. When the team is like this, you must finish off the work. It's amazing. I came in this race with confidence but I never expect something like this. And La Vuelta isn't finished so as a team we are waiting for more.”

Chris Froome finished the stage in seventh place, his GC position intact for yet another day.

Play by Play

Unlike previous stages where it took ages for a breakaway to form, today it was almost immediate. Alexis Gougeard (AG2R-La Mondiale), Davide Villella (Cannondale-Drapac), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Arnaud Courteille (FDJ) and Alessandro De Marchi (BMC) made up the day’s escapees who quickly gained a significant advantage.

After the only intermediate climb, Villella dropped out of the break and back into the peloton, only interested in gaining more points towards his lead in the mountains classification.

QuickStep –Floors led the peloton for their stage hopeful, Trentin and later on in the stage, Cannondale-Drapac and LottoNL-Jumbo also came to the front to share the work.

With 20 km to go, Gougeard and Courteille dropped out of the break. Then De Gendt lost contact with De Marchi a few kilometres later. The Italian BMC rider was eventually caught with seven kilometres to go. From there, it was a hectic and frenetic fight for the line with Trentin handily taking the win.
