Trentin wins stage 10
Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors) claimed his second victory at this year’s Vuelta a Espana after he and José Joaquim Rojas attacked on a challenging descent before the finish. The Italian easily outsprinted the Movistar rider at the finish in ElPozo.
It was by no means a quiet start to stage 10. From the drop of the flag, attacks came left and right, but nothing was allowed to manifest until almost 90 kilometres into the race.
A total of 18 riders made up the break: Jaime Rosón (Caja Rural - Seguros), José Joaquín Rojas (Movistar Team), Luis León Sánchez (Astana Pro Team), Valerio Agnoli (Bahrain - Merida), Alessandro De Marchi (BMC Racing Team), Marc Soler (Movistar Team), Domen Novak (Bahrain - Merida), Alexandre Geniez (AG2R La Mondiale), Arnaud Courteille (FDJ), Bert-jan Lindeman (Team Lotto NL - Jumbo), Julien Bernard (Trek – Segafredo), Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors), Jacques Janse Van Rensburg (Team Dimension Data), Juan José Lobato (Team Lotto NL - Jumbo), Rafael Reis (Caja Rural - Seguros), Nico Denz (AG2R La Mondiale), Niki Terpstra (Quick-Step Floors) and Michael Mørkøv (Team Katusha - Alpecin).
The large group was quickly allowed to gain a five-minute gap on the peloton, who seemed to collectively breathe a sigh of relief after a tough two hours of averaging 52 kilometres an hour.
Included in the break was Trentin, who was allowed to reclaim his green jersey at the intermediate sprint as none of his breakaway companions were interested.
The first climb at Alto del Morron de Totana (Cat. 3) was where we first saw signs of the breakaway disbanding with Van Rensburg the first to attack and carry ahead solo.
Behind, Roson, Rojas and Terpstra eventually caught Van Rensburg and Roson accelerated to lead the race solo. His advantage was short lived, and it was Rojas and Trentin who pulled away from their rivals with more than 30 seconds by the time they reached the finish line. \n
