What a dramatic day in the Swiss Alps as the peloton tackled one of the most challenging stages of this year's Tour de Suisse. The race exploded in the final kilometers as the general classification contenders put each other to the test on a demanding finish that left no room for hiding.
A breakaway group went clear early in the stage and built up a comfortable advantage over the peloton, with the escapees working well together to stay ahead. However, the teams of the overall favorites were not willing to let the break gain too much time, and the gap was managed carefully throughout the day.
As the race entered its decisive final climb, the peloton shattered under the pressure of repeated accelerations from the top teams. Chris Froome, here to build form ahead of the Tour de France, showed his class once again as he and his Sky teammates set a punishing tempo that whittled down the lead group significantly.
In the end it was Chris Froome who came out on top, crossing the finish line ahead of his rivals to claim the stage victory and make a significant move in the general classification standings. His performance was a clear statement of intent from the British rider, who looked every bit the Tour de France favorite that many expect him to be this summer.
The result reshuffled the overall standings considerably, with Froome now in a commanding position as the race heads into its remaining stages. His rivals will need to find something extra if they are to challenge him before the race concludes.
