2017 Tour de Suisse Stage 2 Results & Recap
Stage 2 of the 2017 Tour de Suisse is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
What a dramatic day of racing here in Switzerland as the peloton tackled the second stage of this year's Tour de Suisse. The day produced an exciting finish that kept everyone on the edge of their seats right until the very end.
The stage saw a breakaway group form early on, as is typical for this kind of rolling terrain, with a handful of determined riders pushing clear of the peloton in the opening kilometers. The bunch, however, was never willing to let the gap grow to a dangerous level, and the chase remained controlled throughout the day.
As the race entered its final kilometers, the sprinters and their teams began to flex their muscles, winding up the pace and systematically reeling in what remained of the early move. The lead-out trains began to form in earnest in the closing stages, with several top sprint outfits jostling for position along the barriers.
Ultimately it was Niccolo Bonifazio who timed his effort to perfection, coming through in the final sprint to claim the stage victory and the glory that comes with winning on such a prestigious race. The Italian showed real composure and speed in the finale to edge out his rivals and take a well-deserved win on what was a hotly contested day.
The general classification picture remains tight following today's action, and riders and fans alike will be looking forward to what tomorrow's stage has in store on this fantastic Swiss race.
