Race Recap

The opening stage of this year's Tour de Suisse has delivered an exciting sprint finish to get the race underway. The peloton stuck together for the vast majority of the stage, with the sprinters' teams controlling things in the closing kilometers to set up a bunch gallop.

In the end it was Marcel Kittel who showed his class, powering through the final stretch to claim the stage victory ahead of his rivals. The German sprinter was perfectly positioned in the closing meters and unleashed a devastating burst of speed that none of his competitors could match. It was a commanding display from one of the fastest men in the peloton.

The sprint itself was chaotic, as these finishes often are, with riders jostling for position in the final kilometer. Several sprinters had good lead-out trains working for them, but it was Kittel who benefited from the best positioning and timing as the line approached.

With the stage victory, Kittel also pulls on the overall leader's jersey, giving him the honor of wearing yellow as the race heads into the next stage. It is a fine start to his Tour de Suisse campaign and a strong early season statement from a rider who has shown tremendous form in recent weeks.

The general classification contenders were all safely brought home in the peloton, content to save their energy for the hillier and more challenging days that lie ahead in this race.
