The 2017 Tour de Suisse promises to be one of the most compelling editions of this prestigious Swiss stage race in recent memory, with a field packed full of Grand Tour contenders using the eight-day event as the perfect final preparation before the Tour de France gets underway later in the month.

The race starts in Cham on June 10th and winds its way through some of Switzerland's most spectacular landscapes before concluding in Schaffhausen on June 18th. The route features a demanding mix of terrain, with several summit finishes and challenging mountain stages in the Alps that will test the best climbers in the peloton and likely prove decisive in determining the overall winner.

Chris Froome arrives as one of the headline names, though the Sky leader's participation adds an interesting dimension to the race as he fine-tunes his condition ahead of his primary objective in France. His presence nonetheless raises the quality of the startlist considerably and forces rivals to measure themselves against the reigning Tour de France champion in a competitive environment.

Richie Porte is another major contender. The BMC Racing leader has been in strong form throughout the season and will be targeting overall victory in Switzerland as he builds toward his own Tour de France challenge. Jakob Fuglsang, Nairo Quintana, and Romain Bardet are among others who could challenge for the top positions on the general classification.

The sprinters will have their opportunities on the flatter opening stages, but the race is ultimately expected to be decided in the mountains, where the pure climbers will come to the fore and where the gaps between the genuine contenders will emerge on the steep Swiss roads.
