There are six categorised climbs on tap today, three of which are Haute Categorie. First is the col de la Biche, followed the most difficult way up the Grand Colombier, known as the Directissime, pitching at gradients of 22 percent. The final climb is the Mont du Chat, featured at the Dauphine a month earlier.

Frankie Andreu's take: This is a big mountain day and if you thought the workers had a tough time yesterday, today they will be in a heap of trouble. There is nothing worse than starting off with a mountain. Coming out of Nantua, the climbing starts immediately. It’s a perfect stage to try and isolate the yellow jersey and it will be the first big test of the TDF to see who will have a chance at the podium when they arrive in Paris. Look for teams to send riders up the road to help their leaders in the latter part of the stage. If you’re a good climber, you better be a good descender as the last 30km is downhill coming of the HC climb of Mont du Chat. P.S. The rest day is tomorrow.
