Course Preview

Stage five of the Tour de France will start in Vittel and travel 160.5 km to the first real climbing test of the race at La Planche des Belles Filles in the Vosges Mountains. The final climb reaches max gradients of 20 percent and sure to crown a worthy winner of the fifth day of the Grand Boucle.

Frankie Andreu's take: The first mountain top finish arrives so soon! Many have not even had time to get into the rhythm of the race. It’s difficult to race in your 53x11 at 50km/hr for hours and then adjust to riding a 39x23 in an uphill battle. We could see the first change in the yellow jersey and the climbers will have to be at their best. This will not only be a physical battle but also a mental battle. Whoever does well here will have an edge on their rivals knowing they have struck first while putting doubt into some of their rivals.
