Course Preview

Beautiful Marseille will play host to and individual time trial for the first time at the Tour de France. At 22.5km, this course will be long enough to shake up the final GC standings, especially if there are some climbers who aren’t suited for power courses like this one.

Frankie Andreu's take: Starting and finishing in a soccer stadium, the time trial should be a spectacular setting for the fans to watch the race as it unfolds before them. The TT is twisty and technical with a small climb in the middle of the course. The riders will have to be careful with the winding roads and how much risk they take on the descent of the Notre-Dame de la Garde climb. Because Marseille is on the Mediterranean coast the winds could play a deciding factor in who wins the stage depending on if they start early or later in the day. The G.C. riders will all start near each other so the playing field should be level for them.
