The number “1” seems to be a theme of today’s stage. All the categorized cols (three to be exact) are classified as 1. The route is short but hard at 101km long and will certainly favour a unique winner after the final downhill run into Foix.
Frankie Andreu's take: What in the world is this? A 100km stage, the shortest stage in TDF history, and it’s a mountain stage to boot. With 3 cat 1 climbs, for sure a breakaway succeeds. The cat 1 climbs are difficult but not enough to tear apart the climbing specialists and the G.C. riders. Everyone will want to be in the break and that will make it only faster and harder than usual. The break just has to make it to the top of the final climb, the Mur de Peguere, for them to make it to the finish first. The last 30km’s are all gradual downhill which means the breakaway can easily match the speed of any chasing peloton- or what’s left of the peloton. P.S. It’s Bastille Day, so watch for the French riders to go crazy!
