Course Preview

A tough day in the Pyrenees mountains has been planned for the peloton - 214.5 km of six cols to contend with, including the Port de Bales HC climb. Interestingly, the stage will finish on the Peyragudes airport runway, recognizable to many as a film location from the James Bond movie Tomorrow never Dies.

Frankie Andreu's take: The large mountains come at the end of this stage. The Col de Mente is steep and hard and arrives at the 130km mark. From this point on it’s just going uphill and then downhill and going straight back up again. There is no time for riders to chase from behind or regroup because the mountains arrive one after another. The chip seal roads are slow and with the heat it sometimes feels like riding through sand. It’s one of those days where you’re checking to see if your brakes are rubbing because nothing seems to come easily. For the G.C. riders, they better have adjusted to the heat and not find themselves looking down to check their brakes. Otherwise the longest day in the Pyrenees will take forever.
