Race Recap
Gaviria (Quick Step - Floors) wins stage 5 of the Giro d' Italia
Jungels retains leadership
From the drop of the flag two riders jumped away from the peloton: Maciej Paterski (CCC Sprandi Polkowice) and Evgeniy Shalunov (Gazprom-Rusvelo). Their lead grew to over four minutes with the Quick Step team keeping the duo in check for their pink jersey wearer Bob Jungels.
On the day’s only ranked climb the Andronico Sant'Alfio, a category 4 ascent, Shalunov took the maximum points on offer as he crossed the KOM first.
Once over the top the break’s time started to drop to 3:32.
Through the first sprint line in Taormina at 98 kilometers Paterski took maximum sprint points with his break away partner Shalunov rolled across for second. However, Fernando Gaviria out sprinted Jesper Stuyven (Trek) for third place and the remaining eight points.
Twenty kilometers later at the Roccalumera sprint Paterski crossed the line first and Shalunov took second. Once again, it was the battle for sprint point scraps and Gaviria again grabbing third place. More importantly he took enough points to take the sprint jersey from André Greipel (Lotto Soudal).
This battle for points cut into the break’s lead and it had dropped to under two minutes. It was only a matter of time until the Russian and Polish riders were caught.
With just 15 kilometers remaining the brave break away was caught and the teams started to organize their sprint trains.
The stage ended with two circuits, however Luka Pibernik (UAD) charged out of the pack and crossed the finish line with still one lap still remaining thinking he’d won the stage! He was quickly reabsorbed by the peloton.
One the last lap every inch of road was used as teams set up their sprint trains. Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) looked to be in an ideal position for the win. However, Gaviria was glued to his wheel and came around to take the stage win. His victory also assured that he took the sprint jersey from Greipel who crossed the line in fourth.
Bob Jungels (Quick Step - Floors) retained his leaders jersey and Jan Polanc (UAE) takes the blue mountains jersey.
