Dumoulin wins Giro d’Italia
Van Emden claims the final stage
Tom Dumoulin made history on the final day of the Giro d’Italia, becoming the first Dutch man to win the race overall title. The Sunweb rider put in the time trial ride of his life during the 21st and last stage of the three-week tour to reclaim the maglia rosa from Nairo Quintana (Movistar) by 31 seconds. Quintana dropped to second overall while Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida) took third at 40 seconds.
“This is crazy, I don’t have the words,” Dumoulin said after the race. “It was such a nerve wracking day. I was super nervous and needed to stay calm, but I did it and had good legs, I just went for it.”
Jos van Emden (LottoNL-Jumbo) won the 29.3 km stage after clocking fast time 33:08 early on in the race. The Dutch rider spent the majority of his day in the hot seat, watching as his time stood against each finisher.
Dumoulin came closest to van Emden taking second place, 15 seconds down on his compatriot’s time. Manuel Quinziato, Italian national TT champion, finished third at 27 seconds.
“I’m so happy, so emotional,” van Emben said. “I was second too many times. This is a great day for Dutch cycling. You have two really happy, happy people here.”
There were only two fast times, set by Marcin Bialablocki (CCC) then Quinziato, before van Emden crushed the course averaging 53 kph.\n \nWhen the GC contenders gathered at the start house, the atmosphere was tense as the top five riders were separated by only a minute. It was Dumoulin’s race to lose, and wearing his national colors as the national champion, he calmly set off on course setting blistering times through the two intermediate checks, slower only to van Emden by two seconds.
At the second check, Nibali was 43 seconds off Dumoulin’s pace and Quintana was further back at 1:08, enough to move Dumoulin into the virtual maglia rosa.
After the Dutch rider finished his effort, he waited for Quintana to come across the line before celebrating his first grand tour victory.
