2017 Giro d'Italia Stage 20 Results & Recap
Stage 20 of the 2017 Giro d'Italia is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
Pinot wins penultimate stage
Quintana stays in maglia rosa
Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) took his first grand our win in Asiago Saturday, outsprinting a reduced bunch of GC favorites after Nairo Quintana and Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida) unsuccessfully dispatched Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) on Foza, the last climb of the Giro. Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha-Alpecin) finished second and Nibali took third.
Quintana and Nibali swapped attacks on the Cat. 1 slope, but could only gain a few seconds on the Dutchman, who had pacing help from Bauke Mollema and Tom Jungels when his position was threatened. It’s now Dumoulin’s race to lose during tomorrow’s 29 km time trial, when he’ll have 53 seconds to make up on Quintana to reclaim the pink jersey.
The break formed quickly before the two major climbs of the day with Dries Devenyns (Quick-Step Floors), Dylan Teuns (BMC), Tom-Jelte Slagter (Cannondale-Drapac), Maxim Belkov (Katusha-Alpecin), Matthieu Ladagnous (FDJ), and Filippo Pozzato (Willier Triestina) comprising the early break.
After Dimension Data gave up chasing the break over the first categorized climb, the gap ballooned to over four minutes while Simon Andreetta (Bardiani CSF) and Gregor Mühlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) attempted to bridge across, but retreated back into the peloton after realizing they couldn’t make the jump.
Pozzato was the first rider to pop off the break during the first major climb of the day, while Bahrain Merida went to the front to start chipping away at the break’s advantage.
The Grappa ascent naturally picked off the weaker climbers, leaving the GC contenders to assemble behind the break before the last climb.
The final climb on Foza was where the fireworks happened, when Quintana launched a series of small attacks to try and crack Dumoulin, who was clinging on the back of eight riders. Meanwhile, all that was left of the break was Teuns and Devenyns around 2 minutes 30 seconds ahead.
Nibali tossed out an attack that dropped Dumoulin, however the Sunweb rider looked calm as he dealt with each acceleration at his own pace. Then Zakarin tried his hand with a move that took Domenico Pozzovivo up the road with him.
Zakarin and Pozzovivo were eventually joined by Thibaut Pinot (FDJ), Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida) with 10 km to go, as Dumoulin’s group yo-yo’ed between seven and 30 seconds with Jungels and Mollema helping in the chase.
In the final 150 meters, Pinot launched off the front to win the sprint ahead of Zakarin. Dumoulin limited his losses down to 15 seconds heading into tomorrow’s TT.
