The penultimate stage also has recognition as the Critérium du Dauphiné’s “Queen Stage.” Starting in Aoste, the 167.5 kilometre route takes the riders over six ascents before finishing atop the Alpe d’Huez.
The first climb of the day comes practically immediately into the stage, at 1.2 kilometres to warm up the legs for what’s to come. With 42 kilometres to go, the riders will reach Bourg-d’Oissans, the customary start to the famous Alpe d’Huez climb. However this year the race has opted to crest the Alpe from the other side, meaning there are no switchback turns to the summit.
The riders will face 4,896m of total elevation gain.
