Race Recap

What a day in the mountains as the Giro d'Italia delivered its first serious high-altitude battle. Stage 9 took the peloton from Radda in Chianti to Rocca di Cambio, and by the time the riders reached the finish line, the general classification had been shaken up considerably.

The stage was always going to be a tough one, with several categorized climbs testing the legs of the riders before the final ascent to Rocca di Cambio. As expected, a breakaway group went clear early in the stage, with the peloton content to let them go and settle into a rhythm behind.

The race came alive in the final climb, with the general classification contenders beginning to eye one another nervously. Steven Kruijswijk of LottoNL-Jumbo continued to impress, showing he is a genuine threat for the overall title. The Dutchman has been one of the revelations of this Giro and once again demonstrated his climbing ability on the steep gradients.

Vincenzo Nibali and the other overall favorites were active on the final climb, with attacks and counterattacks testing everyone's reserves. The effort showed on the faces of all the top contenders as they ground their way up toward the finish.

Tom Dumoulin, who has been wearing the maglia rosa, showed considerable resilience once again, battling hard to limit any losses to his rivals and protect his lead in the general classification.

The battle for the Giro is very much alive heading into the rest day that follows, with several riders within striking distance of the overall lead.
