Luca Scinto Says: This will be fast straight from the off. First, because it’s the day before the rest day; second, because the teams who have missed out will be starting to worry; third, because the final 60km is mainly uphill. The break will need a big advantage by then if it’s to have a chance. If it goes after 10km and it has 15 good riders, then maybe. If it goes after 40km and it has five ordinary riders, then no chance. There’s a lot to consider on days like these and one of the important factors is looking after the gregari for later on. So while it’s clear that the winner is going to be a very good climber, he’s unlikely to be a pink jersey contender.
Local History: Let’s remember the unpredictable Romeo Venturelli. At his first Giro in 1960, he annihilated the great Jacques Anquetil in a TT to wear the pink jersey, only to overdo his celebrations that evening. The following day he collapsed, then climbed off on stage 3. He’s arguably the greatest unfulfilled talent in cycling.
