Luca Scinto Says: The Giro starts to ask questions of the GC riders today. The maglia rosa contenders will hope that the break goes early, that it’s got decent riders in it, and that there are enough of them for it to stay away. It’s good for them if it does because they don’t want to race unless forced to. At this point they’re concerned with expending as little energy as they can. So, we’ll see, but if I had to guess I’d say that a group of 30 or 40 will be together at the bottom of the final climb. From there on it’s down to the really punchy guys to try and get away. Regardless, I’m pretty sure the winner will be decided only in the final kilometre.

Local History: Today the Giro heads inland to Basilicata, one of Italy’s poorest regions that’s sure to welcome returning son Domenico Pozzovivo, who won a stage at the 2012 Giro. When the stage rolls through Montalbano Jonico, his home town, chances are the gruppo will allow him to ride ahead alone to soak up the cheers.
