Luca Scinto Says: The time trial means many different things to many different teams. The people targeting the GC will have no choice but be on the rivet for an hour. People like Quintana will be trying to defend themselves, while the likes of Cadel Evans will try to gain as much time as they can. Then the specialists will have been saving themselves – some riders will pin their Giro on getting a good result here. But for teams like ours it’s just about doing the bare minimum to stay inside the time limit. Some will have a hard time simply because they’re not cut out for it, so they will have to work to ensure they’re not eliminated. For others, it’s almost a day off.

Local History: We know little about Savigliano’s Michaelangelo Bosio other than he entered the 1911 Giro and was forced out on the penultimate leg when his frame failed. He’d ridden 3,200km on a 15kg bike with one gear and been in the saddle for over 140 hours, 17 of them on the stage to Bologna alone. That’s hard to swallow.
