Course Preview
Luca Scinto Says: Well it’s not too technical and essentially you know what you’re going to get. A team like ours has no chance of winning it, simply because we don’t have the money to be able to compete. For us – and for a lot of the others – it’s really just a case of getting everyone round in a reasonable time but above all not taking risks. If I were to speculate I’d say the likely winners will be someone like Orica- GreenEdge. They don’t have a GC rider but they do have any number of extremely strong time triallists. It’s quite possible they will build their team around this stage because if they get the maglia rosa here, their job’s half done.
Local History: Although Northern Ireland has never produced a Giro starter, it’s had some cracking riders. Arguably the most pioneering was Belfast’s Ian Moore. Riding for French team Liberia, Ian was good enough to start the 1961 Tour de France. While he didn’t make it round the brutal course, neither did 59 others from that year’s 132 starters.
