2013 Vuelta a España Stage 6 Results & Recap
Stage 6 of the 2013 Vuelta a España is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
Tony Martin almost did the unbelievable on Thursday, nearly winning the sixth stage of the Vuelta a Espana in a solo effort that covered virtually the entire 175km route. The Omega Pharma-QuickStep rider was caught with only meters to go, as Michael Morkov of Saxo-Tinkoff took the sprint win. Maximiliano Richeze (Lampre-Merida) and Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack Leopard) completed the podium, as Martin hung on for seventh place.
The stage was dominated by the time trial world champion, who apparently wanted to put in a long, hard training session. Tony Martin attacked virtually as soon as the flag dropped for the sharp start, and built up a lead of up to seven and a half minutes. His gap was under one minute with 20km to go, but even within the last kilometer it looked as if he would stay away to the end.
