Porte drops out of podium contention as Froome continues in yellow

Dan Martin (Garmin-Sharp) out-sprinted Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) to win stage 9 of the Tour de France on a gripping day of racing that saw Richie Porte (Sky) drop out of overall contention, although his isolated team leader Chris Froome succeeded in retaining the yellow jersey.

The stage to Bagnères-de-Bigorre saw the peloton cross five mountain passes and the attacking began as soon as the flag dropped with Garmin-Sharp setting a fierce tempo on the Portet dâ??Aspet that saw Porte dropped and Froome shorn of all team support with 100 miles still to race.

The Movistar team of Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana took over on the Col de Peyresourde to ensure that there would be no way back for Porte, who conceded over ten minutes on the day.

The scene was then set for a showdown on the final climb of La Hourquette dâ??Anzican, but although Quintana launched no fewer than four accelerations, Froome was able to respond each time and there was ultimately a stalemate between the overall contenders.

Instead, it was left to Dan Martin to take centre stage, as the Irishman jumped clear four kilometres from the summit, bringing Fuglsang with him. They had a lead of 50 seconds by the summit and collaborated well on the 30km drop to Bagnères-de-Bigorre, where Martin emerged victorious in a tense two-up sprint.
