Race Recap

Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEdge) pipped Peter Sagan (Cannondale) in a thrilling sprint finish at the end of stage 3 of the Tour de France in Calvi, while Jan Bakelants (RadioShack-Leopard) retained the yellow jersey.

Gerrans enjoyed a fine lead-out from his Orica-GreenEdge team, who allowed him to nudge ahead of Sagan on the final righthand bend. The Australian then produced a fine sprint to hold off the fast-closing Sagan by a matter of centimetres.

The stage was animated by a five-man break featuring Sébastien Minard (Ag2r-La Mondiale), Alexis Vuillermoz (Sojasun), Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEdge), Cyril Gautier (Europcar) and Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil-DCM), but they were swept up by the peloton on the final climb of the Col de Marsolino.

The fierce pace on the climb saw most of the sprinters jettisoned off the back of the bunch, while Pierre Rolland (Europcar) soloed clear off the front. He was joined on the descent by a determined Sylvain Chavanel (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), Lars Petter Nordhaug (Belkin) and Mikel Nieve (Euskaltel-Euskadi), but they were caught with 3km to go.
