WHEAT FROM THE CHAFF\nFollowing the rest day, it’s down to business as the 2013 Giro scales the heights for the first time. The shadow boxing stops here as the race returns to Friuli to make amends for the 2011 debacle on the Crostis. The first climb, the Passo Cason di Lanza, is actually two ascents, with a short downhill section after six kilometres. The final six kilometres hit gradients of up to 16 percent and will see the cream rise to the top. The final climb starts in earnest after 10 kilometres of false flat with a bruising average rise of 8 percent.

Stefano Zanatta says: "Here we’ll see who won’t win the Giro d’Italia. Not who will win it but for sure those who can’t. These are tough climbs on tight little roads. The time gaps won’t be significant but will give us some indication of form. The objective for the maglia rosa contenders is to be at, say, 95 percent fitness at the start in Naples. Following some tough stages, this will tell us who’s not done enough. I think it’ll be won by a natural climber who’s not a GC contender."
