2026 Tour de Romandie Stage 1 Recap & Results
Tadej Pogačar wasted no time making his presence felt on the opening road stage, taking a commanding victory to move into the overall race lead.
The day's breakaway was formed shortly after the start, with seven riders — Louis Vervaeke, Sam Oomen, Pietro Mattio, Patrick Gamper, Roland Thalmann, Dillon Corkery, and Alexy Faure Prost — building an advantage of over three minutes.
The decisive moment came on the category one ascent of Ovronnaz — 8.9km long with an average gradient of 9.7% — which had the potential to split the race significantly. Pogačar launched his first major attack of the week on the steep gradients, forcing the race open. Lenny Martinez was the first to respond, with Florian Lipowitz fighting back to rejoin over the summit. Jorgen Nordhagen then bridged across to form a decisive four-rider group.
Behind, a chasing group containing Primož Roglič, Antonio Tiberi, and Sergio Higuita attempted to organise a response but could not close the gap.
Into the final kilometre, Pogačar proved strongest in the sprint, taking the win ahead of Lipowitz and Martinez, with Nordhagen fourth. The chasing group crossed the line 21 seconds later, establishing the first meaningful gaps in the general classification.
There was also bad news for INEOS Grenadiers, as Oscar Onley — one of the outside GC hopes — abandoned due to illness, alongside Hamish McKenzie.
Pogačar, already in fine form after winning Liège-Bastogne-Liège days earlier, looks ominous for the rest of the week.
