Course Preview
The second stage of the 2025 Tour de France features a challenging 209-kilometre course. The riders depart from Lauwin-Planque and conclude with a dynamic finish in Boulogne-sur-Mer, where the yellow jersey could potentially change hands.
This stage includes over 2,100 metres of climbing, with critical ascents concentrated in the final stretch. Two short but steep climbs—Côte de Saint-Étienne-au-Mont (900 metres at 10.8%) and Côte d’Outreau (800 metres at 7.9%)—are likely to influence the race in the last 10 kilometres. Following Côte d’Outreau, there are 5.5 kilometres remaining to the finish in Boulogne-sur-Mer, which features a final ascent of approximately 5%.
Prior to this exciting conclusion, riders navigate the undulating landscape of the Hauts-de-France region, approaching the Strait of Dover. Two significant climbs appear on the route: the Côte de Cavron-Saint-Martin, at 1.2 kilometres with a gradient of 5.6% encountered after 103 kilometres, and the steep Côte du Haut Pichot—1 kilometre at 10.3%—tackled at the 179.5-kilometre mark. About 20 kilometres past Haut Pichot, the race intensifies with the Côte de Saint-Étienne-au-Mont leading into the finale.
Peter Sagan emerged victorious in Boulogne-sur-Mer during the 2012 Tour de France, though the finish was different then. Other notable winners in this coastal town on the Opal Coast include Erik Zabel (2001), Jean-Paul van Poppel (1994), and Norbert Callens (1949).
