Pogacar Takes 5th Win
After pocketing stage 19, Tadej Pogacar said that he wouldn't fight for the victory in stage 20, but when Soudal-QuickStep brought back the breakaway, he couldn't help himself. Jonas Vingegaard countered a late attack by Remco Evenepoel, and the two rivals were together at the helm. The yellow jersey was much faster in the sprint-Ă -deux.
In the run-up to the Col de Braus, a huge group distanced the peloton. Wilco Kelderman, Enric Mas, and Clément Champoussin were on board. As they were brought back, Kelderman gave it another go with Armirail. Mas tracked them down and headed out alone in the last 2 km of the climb. Armirail and Kelderman regained contact later.
Jan Tratnik, Marc Soler, Richard Carapaz, Clément Champoussin, and Romain Bardet attacked from the peloton in the descent. Champoussin lost contact on the Col de Turini, and the others rejoined the front with nine kilometres to climb. Jasper Stuyven, Kevin Geniets, and Tobias Halland Johannessen made the junction just before the summit.
Carapaz took the most KOM points at the Turini.
The lead group put a maximum of 4'30" minutes into the peloton, while the gap fell below 3 minutes on the Col de la Colmiane. Carapaz sealed the KOM victory at the summit.
Mas attacked from the lead group within the last 12 kilometres of the finishing climb. Carapaz followed the move, and Bardet came clawing back but was distanced again as Carapaz accelerated.
Meanwhile, Soudal-QuickStep set a fast pace in the GC group. Only Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel, João Almeida, Matteo Jorgenson remained in Mikel Landa’s wheel.
The Basque rider was dropped as Evenepoel tried to shake off his rivals. Then, Almeida took the helm in the elite group. Jorgenson lost contact.
Vingegaard countered a new Evenepoel attack. Only Pogacar was able to follow the move. The two rejoined Carapaz and Mas with 2.5 kilometres to go.
Vingegaard set the pace and Mas was distanced. Carapaz also lost contact in the last kilometre.
The Tour winners of the last four editions rode together to the line. Pogacar took the lead and powered away in the last 150 meters. He opened up such a gap that he crossed the line 7 seconds ahead of the outgoing champion.
